Behind the scenes: discovering LAKRIDS

This is a story I would like to share with you about why we fell so in love with Lakrids, our latest brand in the webshop.

During last Christmas holiday a mysterious black box arrived on our doorstep. It said 'Lakrids by Johan Bülow' on the outside. To be honest, I had never heard of this brand. What was it? Sweets? Liquorice?
In January, I received an e-mail from Lakrids introducing Lakrids as a gourmet liquorice product line, selling in the best design stores and hotels in Europe. Nordic Blends was selected as a future reseller and what I thought of the samples?
I opened the box and found some nice looking jars with liquorice inside. Sweet, salty, red liquorice, liquorice covered in chocolate and different flavours like coffee, passion fruit and strawberry.
I'm not a huge liquorice fan, but these were actually quite good!

When we introduce a new brand at Nordic Blends we have a list we need to tick: Scandinavia-based, quality, originality, a clear concept, a touch of exclusivity and value for money.
Without the charming story behind Lakrids and their amazing quality I'm not sure it would have made it into our collection. In The Netherlands people buy liquorice in kilo bags in the supermarket for a few Euro's. The quality is so-so but hey, it's cheap and it's all there is.
A small jar of Lakrids liquorice is EUR 7, the chocolate covered liquorice EUR 8,50. So: I must admit I had my doubts if this was going to sell.
I decided to meet Lakrids at northmodern fair in Copenhagen anyway. And I'm so happy I did. The story of Johan Bülow, cooking liquorice in his mother's kitchen, was charming enough, but the enthousiasm of the crew and the rapid growth of the brand made me curious. When we were invited to visit the factory, quite close to Copenhagen, the last piece of doubt vanished into thin air.

This liquorice really is something else and nothing like you have ever tasted. It's strong and pure in taste, it's exciting, sometimes a bit weird but it's fun.
It's addictive but at the same time you realize you've got something special in that little jar, so you won't be tempted to eat it all in one go!! Take a few every day, like a bonbon and your pot will last at least a few weeks.

So here we are, presenting the best and most fun liquorice that's on the market: LAKRIDS by Johan Bülow!
The concept is simple but everything evolves around the love for liquorice:
- liquorice in various flavours, numbered 1-5
- liquorice covered in chocolate, letters A-D
- limited editions: LOVE, Easter and Christmas
- foodline (syrups, powders)

If you order Lakrids from us, we will send some recipe cards along, so you can start planning your next kitchen adventure using Lakrids powders or syrups. More recipes can be found on the Lakrids blog.
For a liquorice infused cocktail head to Tunes Bar in the Cnservatorium Hotel in Amsterdam.

You can buy Lakrids here.

Lakrids by Johan Bülow stond erop.

Dat was even wennen!

Nordic Inspiration: a home in white, black and pink

I love interiors in black and white, but usually they are best with a little colour added. Neutrals are also perfect. A few subtle colours work best for a Scandinavian style home.
This one shows white and black with touches of pink. I have always loved pink, it's a happy colour and still soft to the eye.
